Happy Blog-a-versary to Me!

I’m so excited to actually have hit this milestone! One year!! Yay for Shelley and I’m Still Standing! I jumped into the bloggy community a year ago on April 9, 2009 with just a passion to share our family’s story and have found so much more.

I had no idea what I was doing other then loving to write and knowing my topic for sure. I did a little research, bought a few books, hopped online and looked at a few other blogs and was quickly introduced to Mom Bloggers Club and The Sits Girls who both have sites I joined and started meeting other bloggers.

I have loved the bloggy community and meeting new friends from all over the country. It has been a hoot learning about so many wonderful and supportive ladies. There are many stories that I have shared with friends who don’t blog.

I quickly joined Darren’s 31 days to a better blog and tried to keep up but it was a bit faced paced for me, I’m thinking of going back now and redoing the lessons that he gave because there are some wonderful things to be picked up there. The first my “elevator speech” who are you in 1 line… That is when I came up with the tag line “a few special stories,” “a few special inspirations” “from a special needs mom”

I went on to get a “twitter” and began to follow other mom bloggers and build up a little following there and then joined Twitter Moms where I have made some wonderful friends who retweet my blog posts for me weekly in a supportive group. Not only have these fine ladies retweeted for me I now would call them friends and “shout out” to them weekly to see how their lives are going.

A little over a month ago through a site I co founded with my daughter I met a nutritionist who wanted to give someone a “wellness makeover” on television as part of National Nutrition month. I thought hmm I was so going to call a good friends nutritionist and jump on that bandwagon and so I asked her if the person would have to “weigh in” on TV because if that was the case, um not for me but that wasn’t the case and 17lbs later here I am on another journey… My life continues to unfold day by day and post by post. lol

So where is this going? Well, we all know I’m not so much a giveaway or coupon mom, although I have loved meeting many cool ladies who are excellent at doing this. And it has made me savvier about weekly purchases and signing up for giveaways, come on its fun….

Through one of my bloggy buddies I was introduced to the world of “Etsy” and found it to be a wonderful place to buy unique items you can’t find in stores, and being an interior designer (see something you probably didn’t know about me) I love that. I have gathered up some of the fine ladies whose shops I love and I will feature one a week for the next month with a giveaway from each as part of my celebration followed up with my Grand Giveaway of “My Favorite Things” which includes of course Ellie Krieger’s “So Easy” cookbook (which I have loved on my wellness makeover) My fav movies “The Holiday” and “love actually” Michael Buble’s “it’s time” cd, an organization pad to help you since I’m the queen of organization lol, a Starbucks $5 gift card to try a Vivano or a latte and to top it off since we all know that dark chocolate is “good for you” a bag of Ghirardelli’s dark chocolate squares total value about $75.00. I think that’s pretty good right?

I’d like to thank all of you for a year of friendship and wonderful comments, I love hearing from you and hope to continue for a long time.

My “Giving Tree”

I have always believed that reading to your children is a wonderful way to spend quality time with them. Each night since Rebeka and Ainsley were wee little ones, and most of your might remember they were both preemies and were “wee little ones.” We spent a good 30 minutes before they went to sleep reading to them.

I grew up in a house where reading and going to the library was like going to the mall for others, it was done on a weekly basis and when I tell you that my parents bought books like you have never seen, I kid you not, when they moved they needed an entire moving van just for books, and at one point when they built an addition they had to make sure the floors could hold the weight of all the books! But somehow that did instill my enjoyment of reading.

For each birthday I would buy both Rebeka and Ainsley a few new books to add to their library, many of the classic children’s stories and many more of the new up and coming stories. We now have a wonderful library of children’s books to enjoy. In any event, back to my little story…

Over time each of my girls had their favorites which we had to read every night, one was Disney’s book of manners because Rebeka’s favorite line in there was about how “rude” it was to “pick your nose.” And naturally as a little girl she thought that was funny, but she also loved “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. Somewhere in-between my cuddling and the squeezing of Geoffrey’s nose or pulling off his glasses because he was exhausted by the time he had a chance to read to her, she “got” the story, and she loved it!

I thought it would be fun to share with you a craft idea we have done over the years which I shared on my second blog. Take a look, and start your own “giving tree.” I only wished we had the idea to write on the leaves years before! But we still do it to this day!

In honor of our day of “thanks” and all I am grateful for. I appreciate all of you my followers and I have loved hearing from you since I began blogging! I am giving away a copy of “The Giving Tree” all wrapped up and ready for the holidays. If you can’t use it, it would make a wonderful gift!

And thank you for “giving” so much to me… You will “all” be on my leaf this year, as I am so thankful for all of you!

Catching Up!

I have been mad crazy these last few days between preparing for a high school reunion brunch that I hosted at my home last weekend, cooking, and cleaning up for that, and cooking again for the return of Rebeka for her “fall break.” I love that “fall break” we didn’t have anything like that when I went to college, but you know I’m always happy to see her sunny face when she returns… And I am taking the “dive” into the online world of business and opening an Etsy shop, which I will share more with you as it comes closer… so you can see I’ve been a “little busy.”

In my daily travels of bloggyland I came across Yanna who lives across the big gulp in Greece. She shared a link with us about Etsy and being that I’m about to launch my shop I found this interesting and thought you might too. Yanna makes lovely Decoupage art which can be seen at her shop As everyone knows I’m a little bit of a gardener and I just love this piece she created.

And then Jamie wrote a great post to help with organizing your day as a crafter which I found interesting since I am the “queen of organization” reading her tips was a great way to start my shop. Her shop is where you can find adorable and bright fabric gifts for you or your friends, I personally love this little “camera case” which is to hold business cards, and it just might be good for my new cards!

My friend Marilyn recently launched her newly designed website for her beautifully handmade bags, you should stop by to see the cute design of her site and her bags! And of course today she had to “remind us all that there are only 80 more days till Christmas!” omg, there goes the year! Lol And she shared her Christmas list with us, hmmm that has got me thinking about mine… this adorable and colorful pin cushion would work out great for my new business ventures! I think I’ll let the husband know…

Hopefully my new shop will be “discovered” by someone on TV maybe a party planner, or Bridezilla, well not sure I’d like to deal with anyone by that name, or HGTV, Martha, or of course Oprah… but my friend Michelle was fortunate enough to have had her beautiful handmade earrings seen in Boston’s Fashion week during Keith Lissner’s runway show. How exciting for her! But they are beautiful!

And now a small and simple thank you to my friend Sylvia who I met through creative bloggers who sent me the most precious necklace. It is a Dove of peace and I will think of her every time I wear it! Thanks again Sylvia it is a cherished gift!

I really love meeting new people and reading their stories, and seeing what they craft, or give-away, or clip, this is such a wonderful community and brings a smile to my face at least once a day so to all of you near and far, thank you for your friendship!
