What’s the skinny on water?

Water Droplet

Since I was a young adult and started with my first “diet” one thing that was constantly drilled into my head aside from the obvious that eating cake and cookies are a big no no on a “diet” was drink water… And somewhere along the way drinking 8 glasses of water a day became a hard rule with dieting. However, it is not only when we are looking to trim down that we should be thinking about drinking water.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s website when asked; “How much should you drink every day?”

It’s a simple question with no easy answers. Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years, but in truth, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.

Although no single formula fits everyone, knowing more about your body’s need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.

So the long and short of it is that your body is a pretty good at letting you know when we need a drink. Are you thirsty? It is probably obvious on summer day when you are sweating in the 90 degree heat you are going to get thirsty.

Ellie Krieger RD shared this in Fine Cooking, “As the weather heats up, it is no coincidence that the fruits and vegetables that are fresh for picking are plump with water-juicy, ripe peaches, plums, and melons, crisp lettuces, succulent tomatoes and cool cucumbers. And the dishes we lean toward, like salads, smoothies, yogurt with fruit, gazpacho and seafood, also contribute to hydration. Surprising, about 20 percent of our total water intake comes from the food we eat.

You’ll get the remaining 80 percent from beverages. Water is best but other drinks count, too.”

So back to our water and drinks…. I am proud to say that I gave up the diet soda a year ago when I began my wellness makeover and have tried to drink as much water as possible. In doing this I have experimented with many “flavors” from a pouch which were commercially produced as well as making concoctions in my kitchen. Turns out that my concoctions are some of my favorite and most refreshing drinks.

Here is a twist on the old cucumber-water.

mint and cucumberCucumber-Mint Water

¼ c fresh Mint leaves
4 Tablespoons of sugar
1 c boiling water
½ long English cucumber (about 2 cups)
2 Tablespoons of lime juice

cup of mint
mint cut right from our own “farmville!”

come on sweetness

In a pot combine the mint leaves and sugar

mixing splenda and mint
Take a spoon and mash the mint

pouring water from measuring cup
Add the boiling water and let steep for 15 minutes

cucumbers steep in water
While that is steeping and smelling wonderful, in a blender toss in the cucumber and puree with 2 cups of cold water

blending the mind and water mixtue
look at that gorgeous color

straining the mixture
Strain the cucumber liquid into a bowl.

adding mint mixture
After the mint has steeped for 15 minutes strain that through the bowl with the cucumber liquid.

Get rid of the wonderfully smelling remains, or I suppose you could use these for your eyes as I’ve seen many places..

adding lime juice
Pour the mixture into a pitcher and add the lime juice

refreshing cucumber mint waterAdd 3 cups of cold water and stir
Enjoy over ice

I love this so much and my picky picky family does too, give it a try and let me know what you think! Do you have a favorite water concoction you’d like to share?

…and now It’s a new day!

I did it! I took the “first step” in getting my wellness journey back on track… You know what I did? The dreaded… stepping on the scale! How many of us just fear this number sooo much? Last night I even dreamed about it in anticipation of my “Monday morning Weigh in.” Ha now I’m wishing my weight in my dream was the weight in reality… NOT! Of course NOT! And let me tell you it wasn’t a “small” number of wishful thinking… just a few pounds under where I am now!

But… I’m not going to beat myself up. I had a wonderful start last year with Rebecca and she taught me a LOT about mindful eating. I do know and understand I am an emotional eater and like with any “addiction” which I am beginning to feel that emotional eating falls into, I need to really take control of it.

Unfortunately, I have had a few really bad months and really have been suffering with panic which of course stopped me from going to the gym. You ask why, well I panic in the car and from January till the present have “locked” myself away at home not wanting to do anything. I’m telling you there were days that taking a shower was a struggle as I was panicking so much. But that is a whole other topic which I will be exploring.

The good news is I am taking this day by day… Meal by meal…. Work out by work out… and not looking for the short fix… I’m back on track with understanding this is for the long haul… So please welcome me back to the world of the living and caring about myself… again.

Let’s challenge each other!

However, this picture isn’t from today, it is pretty current, it’s from a few weeks ago when I went away to celebrate my 26th anniversary with my husband.

Day One:

• Step on the scale! I dare you! Just do it! It will be the beginning of your journey too! Cry, Scream, throw a fit… and then get over it and move on!

• Write down the number… Hide it in your drawer… Post it on the fridge.. or above your desk

• Take a photo of yourself today!

Now who is with me? Jump on board and follow my wellness makeover both here and on my facebook where I will be putting up recipes and inspirational posts-well I hope you find them inspirational!

Where is my party list you ask?

Here I am doing what I really enjoy doing… again… What is that you ask? Helping people… I get real pleasure out of helping someone out, I don’t know what it is but I know I was born with this need to want to “help.”

When I was little I was always thinking of ways to help out and fund a “Ronald McDonald” carnival, OK, I guess I am dating myself because this was wayyyy before the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities was what it is today, but I always wanted to think of ways to get a little money together so I could have a carnival in my backyard to help out and send money to help sick children.

Then when I was older I seriously thought about starting a camp for children with cancer so they could experience a fun summer like I was fortunate to have. And then my life changed when I gave birth to a beautiful daughter whose disability would not only change my life but the worlds and I saw “play” or the lack of through her eyes and I opened the world eyes to the need to build fully inclusive playgrounds.

Now, I’m writing about all of this and working on improving and once again “helping out” by supporting a wonderful group of ladies and leading a forum to Build Better Blogs. I look at this like a party; it is festive, there is music, (I always have music!) and sometimes there is coffee, food, or even an occasional glass of wine but there is always a lot fun! And of course with a party there MUST be party favors…

So what I am asking all of our fine Sits June 31DBBB ladies to do is please join my Party List so that we have a Master Blogroll for our summer group. And by doing so you will be entered into my first “party favor” giveaway… Which will be…. A $25 Gift Certificate to Victoria’s Secret…

All you have to do is join up with the linky love…
